Detailed description of all parts of the World War I NNC uniform and remarks about its wearing. Interesting to compare this WW I NNC uniform with the one of the WWII period.

Uncle Sam needs Nurses by the Amercian National Red Cross, Washington, D.C., ARC 779, Jan., 1941. Pre-war brochure which foresees the war emergency and encourage nurses to join the Red Cross (and in case of war additionally the Army Nurse Corps or Navy Nurse Corps). Navy Nurse

. The book contains a lot of details about the life of Navy Nurses during WWII. It is written in a third person "story style" that makes it much easier and interesting to read than if the author simply quoted facts and history. Stories about nurses serving in the Pacific, Alaska, and Europe. Interesting details about the flight nurses program.

The Navy Officer's Guide by Arthur A Ageton, Commander , U.S. Navy, Whittlesey House McGraw-Hill Book Company (1943) The Naval Officer's Guide contains all information an officer in the Navy needed to know. For example, it gives details about correct saluting, discipline, uniforms and equipment.  The part about Navy Nurse Corps uniforms is illustrated with black and white pictures. It lists all items Navy Nurses required to possess, informs about the different rank insignia and gives hints about "Care of the Uniform".

... A Navy gun crew serving on a ramshackle old merchant-marine freighter fight against Nazi bombers and U-boats. After the first attack a young Navy Nurse who is in love with one of the crew members comes abroad the freighter to treat casualties. Later, the crew is able to capture a Nazi supply ship. Some of the men volunteer to staff the Nazi ship and then use it against its own Navy.

To the Shores of Tripolis directed by Bruce Humberstone, Black and White (1942), Type: War/Drama A young spoiled and carefree playboy joins the Marines and has many troubles to accept the rules of military life. In the end, he can replace his selfishness by selfless valor and wins the respect of his fellow Marines and the love fells of a beautiful Navy Nurse. The movie was filmed with the full cooperation of the U.S. Marine Corps.

They were expendable directed by John Ford, Black & White (1945), Type: War/Drama Following the devastation of Pearl Harbor, two navy skippers take their small PT boats into action against the immense Japanese cruiser. When the Navy commander is wounded on the PT boat at Bataan, Philippines, he is treated by a Navy Nurse on besieged Corregidor.

Detailed history of the Navy Nurse Corps written by the retired Navy Nurse Doris Sterner. Besides many facts about the corps the author gives a biographical look on the lives of several nurses.

In Defense of a Nation - Servicewomen in World War II by Major General Jeanne M. Holm, USAF

This book contains excellent overviews of several WWII women's organization (like WAVES, SPARS, WAC, ANC, NNC, WASP, Women Marines) illustrated with nice black and white photographs.

Dressed for Duty, America's Women in Uniform 1898-1973 (Volume One) by Jill Halcomb Smith, R. James Bender Publishing (2001)

The two volumes about women's organizations of the last century cover all military branches and especially give interesting details about several mostly forgotten civilian organizations. 
They contain many original photographs and some color pictures of uniform items. 
The chapter about the NNC is in Volume One.

What a Way to Spend a War: Navy Nurse POWs in the Philippines

. The World War II memoir of Dorothy Danner describes her life as a POW in Manila for 3 years. She and 10 other Navy Nurses suffered deprivation of even basic necessities and lived in constant fear for their lives during their interment. Additionally, she writes about the new set of difficulties she had to cope with after her return to the United States when she tried to readjust to normal life.

Free a Man to Fight! Women Soldiers of Word War II by Mindy Pomper & RYS Productions (1999) . Excellent video that features rare archival footage interwoven with intimate interviews of women who served in the military during WWII. 
Unfortuntaley, the documentary contains a few mistakes. More information about these inaccuracies can be found here

Women At War - from the home front to the front lines by 'V for Victory', Atlas Video Inc. (1991) This documentary consists mainly of original newsreel stories to detail the vital contributions made by women during World War II, going from the factories to the battlefields. Covers WAC, Army Nurses, WAVES, Marines, Navy Nurses, Cadet Nurses, etc.
